A Tech Tip: Update All Computers to Windows 10 or 11 by January 2023

by | Jul 16, 2022 | Resources

Here’s a tip to add to your tech to-do list: Make sure all of your business computers are updated to Windows 10 or 11 by January 10, 2023. That’s because after that date, Windows will no longer offer security updates and support for Windows 8 and 8.1.

That lack of security updates could leave Windows systems with Windows 8 and 8.1 vulnerable to a cyber-attack.

Right now, Windows is already in a transition period that it is calling “extended support.” This means that while it continues to offer security updates and paid support for Windows 8 and 8.1 users, it is not offering design and feature updates.

Beginning January 10, 2023, Windows will no longer offer the following for Windows 8 and 8.1 users:

  • Bug fixes
  • Security protection
  • Software updates

This will make your device with Windows 8 vulnerable to viruses. Microsoft will no longer support these versions of Windows.

How Should I Respond to the End of Support for Windows 8 and 8.1?

The best route is to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11. You may need to buy new hardware (like a new computer) that includes Windows 10 or 11.

You may be able to upgrade your current device with Windows 8/8.1 to a newer Windows version. However, you need to first make sure the device has the hardware to do this.

Every time Windows releases a new operating system, it also has security updates and features to address potential problems that may arise. If you use software that isn’t updated and supported, you leave your computers vulnerable to viruses. This can threaten sensitive business information that you don’t want to lose.

Any change to technology can be stressful, but there’s a way to make it a little easier. Work with a company experienced in providing tech support for local Bradenton businesses, like Futra.
